And do you think I could use the Birdbrand black tar to do that black bit that the bottom of cottage walls have? It would actually be going onto new, bare bricks?

Personally, I think I'd use something rather more breathable in that area. Something like:

Stockholm tar is still available from proper boat chandlers, and also from farmers' suppliers.

The traditional "tar" coating on old boats involved melting blocks of bitumin and then mixing in stockholm tar. Paint it on hot and bubbly - gorgeous stuff!
