Yes, I wonder how many sales pitches incorporate some phoney "save the world" proposition, these days. It's probably quicker to list those that don't.

There'll always be bandwagons, and there'll always be climbers-on.

Don't get me going about warm front, I do the handyman thing for my paraplegic nephew. After a period of about 3 years I had cause to go up into his loft ( to move his pull switch for signalling use), I mentioned to him that every Plumber Sky installation man who had been in the loft had rolled backed the insulation and had not replaced it. I suggested that he actually employed someone (builder friend?) to go through the and to restore things . Time moves on, I go into the loft to install some TV cable, and there is "fluffed up" glass fibre all around the loft hatch and over the boarded walkway. The bit I was interested in, still did not have any insulation on it!!!!! :evil: Yes it was that bunch of cowboys contracted to warm front. Its a tailor made situation for a national rip-off -old/infirm and lofts. If I had more time I would chase this thing and get some ones a**e kicked, but lifes too short. :roll:

I had the very same type of cold call, again registered with the telephone preference.

They told me I had been awarded a grant !!

I told them I had solid walls.

They told me "we can help with the roof too"

I said its full of insulation now, so how?

They soon went away quickly then.


Anglian windows called too, I almost just arranged a site visit survey from them on the Merchants House for a bit of fun, but just told them, its listed, it has leaded lights........maybe next time :twisted:

I'm always tempted to tell cold callers I'm neither "the householder" nor Mr [my partner's second name] but I was just nicking the phone when it rang....in practice I wouldn't want to waste the police time when one of them actually bothered to call the cops.

Unlike replacing good windows with new ones, loft insulation should pay back pretty fast because it's cheap and heat rises.

I can see why the grant scheme goes to approved companies (rather than cash) as the purpose is to provide employment and lower our emissions. Unfortunately I can see that like the tax breaks for computers the intent is being eroded and it's simply building an unsustainable base of grant maintained insulation firms. What will they do when all the free installations have been done?

A good diversionary tactict to cold callers is to say " double glazing, Mr Smith, across the road is thinking of getting some". Also works for Mormons, but don't mention double glazing, mumble something about salvation.

Just don't put the phone on the table and leave it once you find out it's a cold caller - I did that once and the Police arrived asking if I was alright, was there anyone in the house etc... The Pennine Windows cold caller had got concerned when I answered the phone and then went silent. The policewoman sent to check up on my welfare went away in hysterics.

It was rather reassuring that a cold caller should be concerned that someone he cold called had collapsed as a result of his call - now they get Radio 4 played down the phone at them...

I like to answer all of their questions with 'Yes' until the cold caller gives up put the phone down....

Although one did get creative and say 'Are you an idiot?' and I was hoist with my own petard.
