My memory's probably at fault, but weren't most of the scenic parts of the country originally forest?

After the last glacial period 12,000 years ago all of Britain slowly became part of an ancient forest that extended as far as Bordeaux.
About 8000 years ago some of the forest began to be cleared and continued to be cleared so that about 500 BC half of Britain was de-forested.
Today forest and woodland covers about 1% of Britain.

Mind, recent theories question that the coverage was quite so blanket, to clear that lot must have taken a vast amount of time and manpower... wonder how large the population was at that time?

Still, without computers I suspect they hadn't much to keep them busy apart from a bit of tree felling.

As in the rain forests of today, scorch and burn techniques were used to start with.

Then it was left to livestock to keep it clear.

Well, as I said, I'm not old enough to recall it... but there are some who are questioning that theory.

But my current sheep interest is in the growth of the colonial frozen meat trade, in the latter part of the 19th c and early 20th c. New Zealand and Australia owe a great deal of their prosperity to the invention of steam powered refrigeration.

Sheep and cold seem to be linked historically in all manner of ways.
