I've had my second tin now where I've come back to use some more after a couple of years and when stirring it a rust hole has appeared in the bottom - seems to be corroding from the inside out.

Yes, I've had that happen with MSP as well.

Yeah, you'd think they'd sell water paint in a plastic pot or at least a coated tin.

I have had a tin of Earthborn clay paint do that when I picked it up by the handle after a couple of years.

The handle and the tin came upwards, the base of the can and the contents stayed on the shed floor

I pinged a note to Bedec about the tins (life, me?) - they replied promptly to say it's something they'd definitely look into. I suspect most Trade users wouldn't have an issue as they're unlikely to hang on to part tins of paint like DIY'ers do.

Where was the paint from? If it was the "Linseed Paint Company" be aware I had paint that reacted really badly and ended up crazing across all of it's surface, it weathered terribly and all had to be stripped off within 2 years. Might have been a duff batch though.

Coming back onto this thread to ask about "all had to be stripped off" in your post above, Feltwell, and how that works.....

I have been touching up and reapplying linseed oil paint every summer to my four exposed south-facing windows, but I think the time has come to follow others and replace with Bedec MSP, of which I did a trial two years ago and it seems to be performing well.

So the question is about removal of the linseed oil paint. I asked Bedec and they said just remove any flakes, sand it to provide a key and go over the top, but I think I'd feel better with a more thorough job.

Interestingly, removing some silicone sealant from adjacent to a window frame revealed that silicone sealant remover, the cheap stuff from Screwfix, softens the linseed oil paint to the point that it can just be scraped off with a knife. However, I don't know what's in silicone remover and whether it would attack the Bedec, so perhaps that's not a good idea.

Sanding would be a total pain in the rump as the windows are fiddly, with glazing bars. Does anyone have any other tips?

I don't think you need a more thorough job Zebra - which is not something I say very often! I really don't think there is a benefit to doing so here.

Wash them down, let them dry, and a very quick hand sand is all I would do if the paint is sound and well stuck. I know sanding is a pain but honestly all it needs is a couple of rubs just to give a light key to the surface, if the linseed is sound.

I had to rub my woodwork down more but that was because the previous stuff had crazed. Even then I didn't go down to bare wood all the way along, just enough to remove the crazing.
