Duchess, Mr Hughes is prone to hiding his light under a bushel, and rarely lets on that he has in fact designed apartments for Her Majesty at Buckingham Palace, not to mention preserving the built heritage of Norwich and environs as Conservation Officer, and lecturing and publishing on windmills.

Well, alright then, but apart from designing apartments for Her Maj, preserving the historic buildings of Naarch and being something of an expert on windmills . . . What has Mr Hughes ever done for our heritage? :wink:

Did the builder fix cloth/hessian over the area while the lime was carbonating?

I ask, because those holes look very like the nail holes in our sole plates.
Maybe he disguised them in some way and the disguise has fallen off. I don't think there are many woodboring critters would make holes like that (slightly off circular).

Yep - I'm no expert but if we are talking about those two large holes one above the other, then they don't look like munchers holes. They are large and regular to my eye.

Bullet holes perhaps (!) or more likely nailing for some reason. It could be there are some minor holes that don't show up in the pictures (the detail is a bit fuzzy).

There is a simple test often described when the worms are active (late spring/early summer)- place some tissue paper over the area. When the beasties exit their holes and fly off, their leave holes in the paper.

Are these holes regularly spaced along the woodwork? We have small round holes (about 5mm) all over our framework and it's the tell tale signs of the halfwit who thought that treating 400 year old timber for woodworm might actually work. I have no idea how he thought injecting gunk into timbers like steel was going to kill woodworm that probably died donkeys years ago. When I took the cement render of the internal plinth I found them in the brick as well :roll: .
