Beams, Ceilings, Distance???

What we did was to leave as much depth on show as we could, whilst ensuring there was a thick slab of acoustic insulation in to reduce sound transmission and heat losses. We went for the Rockwool R and plasterboard attached to wooden battens approach and we're very happy with the result. In another life we would have had lath and plaster ceilings, but on this occasion addressing noise concerns won the debate.

if you counterbatten, it has the useful property that it leaves a void into which wires - for lighting, telephone, aerials, home hub, plumbing, heating and all sorts of services can be run discretly along joists

While I agree with Ian, the electronics experts on this forum may have additional comments to make about how to arrange - or rather separate - such things as mains cables, aerial cables and data cables.

The ideal scenario is to have the lower face of the floorboards exposed and the full depth of beam showing .

We stayed at a National Trust holiday let a while ago at Chastleton (sp?) which had this arrangement and the 'traditional' gaps between the boards.
It was a bit disconcerting when you turned the lights off in the lower bedroom to have the light streaming down from the bedroom above!
Looking at their website it looks like they may have laid carpet now and it was a lovely place to spend Christmas.
