All the beams in our C16 attic bedrooms are limewashed. Dave is spot on about it easily washing off, which I've done in some places, leaving a lovely looking limed-oak finish. I'm in two minds about washing it all off or re-limewashing, but I've plenty of time and other priorities before making that particular decision.
The main beams in the first floor C16 bedrooms are boxed in, similar to Lou's by the sound of it. I had to remove the boxing around one beam to make some repairs and the beam inside was indeed in a natural and fairly rough state. It also turned out to be some sort of pine (douglas fir?) as I discovered when drilling holes for some metal bracing.
