Beam repair

If the CO is so keen to preserve the actual beam, as an artefact, rather than simply an appropriate replacement beam, then what about cutting off one end back to sound timber, shifting it along into the wall at that end, and then doing a proper spliced timber replacement extension at the other end?
Neater and sounder to repair one end only, rather than both?

Agree - Thats exactly what I did with the above repair - both ends where shot.
Took the whole thing down, cut one end good, sealed with bitumen, scarfed the other with new oak, supported with post and brace.

This does however require taking down the whole floor of the room above - which I believe was one of the orginal problems

Yes this is part of the problem, especially as the rafters look as though they are dovetailed into the beam. Floor above is also perfectly level at the moment (obviously much previous carpentry).

Apparently this is a grey area as far as BRegs and listed building consent, between alteration and repair. Too much repair and it becomes alteration with health and safety implications etc etc.

Looks as though CO will be OK with checking diagrams/templates prepared by builder before work, rather than needing engineer, at the moment.
