Neater and sounder to repair one end only, rather than both?
Agree - Thats exactly what I did with the above repair - both ends where shot.
Took the whole thing down, cut one end good, sealed with bitumen, scarfed the other with new oak, supported with post and brace.
This does however require taking down the whole floor of the room above - which I believe was one of the orginal problems
