Bathroom Query (or why did I look behind that wall!)

Some years ago in a previous property we were advised to line the walls with marine quality ply when creating a shower cubicle. The sheets were considerably larger than Aquapanel & a whole lot cheaper - be sure to seal any joins before tiling.
We also used a tile edging strip which fixes between the shower base & behind the tiles around the bottom as we felt this can be a weak area unless base has an upstand.

I used a product called Wedi board (cement faced foam) and is great as you can cut it with a Stanley knife and it is very light so you can carry it up stairs easily. It is easier to use than Handibacker stuff I think

I then used the tanking tape (rubber stuff) and the BAl tanking stuff (dont get it on your hands)

If used with a good tray with a small upstand for behind the tiles this will give you a bomb proof shower, we have a Megaflow cylinder with very high water pressure giving a typically unBritish shower!!! and have had no leaks yet.

I ordered from Keyline (one in Colchester) via phone and was delivered in 2 days

This stuff goes against the whole Listed - eco ideals but is one area where modern is good!

How much is the wedi board? (and is the tape and sealer very expensive?) I must admit the light weight does appeal.

As mentioned in a post above can you easily get upright tipe seals to go behind the lower tiles seperately from the shower tray?

Actually (as mentioned above) I've used that Bal tanking kit straight on to ordinary plasterboard. It's very good, so long as you follow the directions carefully.

The whole lot was quite pricey with the tape about £5 per m, the tanking gear £40 ish, and the nasty price was £400 ish for the Wedi but I did the whole room not just the shower but the floor as well as it is used under UF heating to help dry the place after Godzilla has been in the bathroom!!!

If you do a search on google you can see a fancy bathroom place that does it for £53 for a sheet, this is a con you should pay at least half that.

Watch out as some places charge way too much.

In my expert opinion, this is inadvisable. Godzilla may cause unpleasant odours in your bathroom, and is extremely unlikely to clean the bath after use.
