If there is no specific reference to bathrooms in the regs for room ventilation, why are they singled out by buiilding control? Are they saying that a lounge, bedroom, stairway or study are adequately ventilated by normal use of doors and windows, even if double glazed and potentially full of guests (well, the lounge anyway). But a bathroom, which is rarely used by more than one person at a time, needs additional air circulation?

Because they are often full of hot steamy air which will condense potentially producing a damp problem. If it is bad enough then you get mould which could lead to health problems.

There are ventilation requirements given for all rooms along with lovely details about how big the gaps under your doors should be.

I would recommend reading it - features such fab ideas as:

Mechanically operated purge ventilators (you may have these already - I call mine windows); and
Vertical stack extract systems (chimneys?)

If I remember correctly, the 15L point is given as a basic standard for bathrooms. If its just a WC, I think you can get away with only a mechanically operated purge ventilator...

I vented my bathrooms through the ceiling, via a fan mounted in the loft and into a Lapvent retrofitted into the roofing felt.

Only issue was my stone slates are heavy, so my rafters were close together and I had to remove a small amount from the rafters to slide the lapvent units between them.

this is the type we used - like a little UFO on the wall with the opening iris - keeps out the draughts when not in use.l Very unobtrusive and quiet, not like the ones in our last house that sounded like mini jet engines. The website link above was the cheapest place i could find them and the delivery service was fast.

Thank you for all the helpful advice, views and humour. Just wanted to tell you all that I was chuffed to bits yesterday to hear that building control have agreed that I don't have to have trickle vents in the kitchen and bathroom windows (new, wooden windows going into a new extension) provided I have an air brick in each room. For me this is one small victory. My builder is now planning to approach building control about the extractor fan - I'll let you know how we get on. I seem to be being told I need one in the bathroom but not in the kitchen. All very strange. Clearly my emphasis on the ventilation properties of a cat flap helped with the anti-trickle vent argument. Perhaps I need a cap flap in the bathroom! Vicky

I believe that, under Building Regulations, this is only a requirement if your cat takes regular baths.

We did once bath our cat in our previous house in the roll top bath. He'd gotten under a car or something and was covered in oil, and the cat care manual said bathing was needed. Well never again, he turned into a sodden rat (there's nothing to him under all the fur) and lay on the bath mat like he was dead. My other half thought he'd killed him. Had to dry him with a hair dryer. Smelt nicely of banana shampoo for a while afterwards though which is better than his normal stench.

If it's anything like the manual that came with our washing machine, it will cover a dozen different models of cat - none of them quite the same as the model that you purchased.

When we moved into our last house we took the cats first and left them in an empty room with the shutters and door shut while we started to clean. Came back and found them both missing. After a few minutes we worked out they'd jumped up and sat on the ledge at the bottom of the chimney. Both were ridiculously dirty.
Bathing cats is not fun. One held them down in the bath while the other worked the shower over it. Cuts, slices and scratches aplenty and they sulked for a week...so did we

No, FW, I don't. But only because we haven't got a cat. Can't stand the bl@@dy things.

However, I suspect that's my inferiority complex at work. I could never love a pet that thinks it's more intelligent than I am (and, worse still, is probably right).
