The last run I did (Seaton Grizzly - 20 miles of bogs & hills http://www.hardleyrunners.co.uk/Gallery/Grizzly_110313/slides/IMG_4336.html), I was surprised that the average age of the runners was around 50. This sort of running at least, doesn't appear to be a young persons sport.

Some years ago our son ran in the London Marathon. We were standing at the roadside waiting to cheer him on, when I noticed among the crowd on the other side of the road a man that I estimated to be in his mid-50s. He was holding up a large banner that said, "COME ON MUM!".MdB said:

To be honest I hate swimming (or in my case, semi-coordinated sinking). I'm really enjoying running and charting the progress as it gets easier.
8 weeks ago I was about 13 inches too short for my weight and hadn't run more than a hundred yards since PE lessons 25 years ago - and when I did I needed resuscitating.
8 weeks later I can run 5 miles in reasonable comfort; it feels good, better each time. I can run for an hour. It's working wonders - I'm now only 9 inches too short for my weight. Strangely, getting taller seems to have made my trousers and belts stretch as I can't keep up my trousers any more.
Knees ache a little after a long run... but I can sense everything getting stronger and more flexible. I've followed MdB's advice - slow running, good shoes and good socks.
The half-marathon is 6 weeks away, and I think I will probably be able to get round before they re-open the roads and hopefully finish ahead of the chap in the diving suit. As soon as I am sure I will be able to enter, I'll invite you to my blog where I can pester you for sponsorship for a special charidee. 8)

That's an interesting phenomenon, FW. I have the opposite problem to deal with. I wear my dinner jacket only every few years, and each time I take it out of the wardrobe it's shrunk a bit more.FamilyWiggs said:

You're not the only one! My faulty wardrobe has been pulling such tricks for quite a few years now.
Good points about the effects of runnning on the leg joints, though my father seems to have avoided any serious problems over a lifetime of regular running. Luck of the draw, perhaps?
I recall a radio programme about Seb Coe's early training regime when his father (also his early trainer) would follow in a car as Seb ran up hills but would never let him run downhill as this, apparently, caused far worse jarring to the joints.
I presume cycling is also a bit easier on the joints than running. it certainly seems to have become very popular in recent years, judging by the packs of lycra-clad cyclists is seem to regularly see at weekends.
