The print on Nigels is very similar to a zaffany one i have been looking at and playing around with.... so much choice out there the world is everyones Oyster.!
Having one thats hand printed is also something i am toying with for the hall stairs and landing but as i need 40 rolls... its going to take some serious thinking about! Or should i say something i need to use my womanly persuasions in order to get! :lol: :lol:

By the way, how on earth do you work out how much wallpaper you need? I'm looking at all sorts of conflicting bits of advice with sums on the Internet, and have calculated that I need somewhere between 3 and 15 rolls.The perimeter is 11 m 26. The height is 70 cm. The wallpaper is 10m per roll, and 53cm wide. i've thought and thought, covered a whole side of paper with sums, but can get nothing very firm. Help?? xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I think Nigel had his wallpaper hand printed.

It was a standard Watts of Westminster design (no relation). I had a batch hand printed to my colour specification. I forget the price per roll, but I think it worked out much cheaper than the cost of all the materials for my curtains.

I worked out the number of rolls very carefully and only just had enough. One bad mistake and I would have been in big trouble. The repeat was quite big but it worked to my advantage in that it fitted the wall height to within about three or four inches (needing very careful cutting). I hung it myself.

Machine printing uses oil based inks I believe, whereas hand printing uses a more distemper like formulation, which can give much more intense colours. The intensity of my dark green was simply not available in a machine made paper, and I looked at lots before settling on the hand printed option. The finished room is perhaps too dark now, but I am not displeased with it and am working on getting the lighting better and the furnishings a bit more coordinated.

Joce - what is the repeat? With this I should be able to have a stab at your estimate

I think dark is under-rated. People go on and on about creating light rooms, but if the room has an ambiance of sumptuous grandeur, and it's where you spend the evening, what's wrong with dark and moody? With roaring fire and large brandy. Nigel's room looks pretty perfect to me.

generally if its full drops you are doing off a roll.. assuming a standard repeat you will get 4 full drops per roll of wall paper on a standard 8ft tall skirting to ceiling height if you do half drops its 8.

forgot to say ... the drop of my central column on my hallway is 11m on its own luckily i have oak panelling at the bottom so one full drop on my column is one roll... there are 5 drops to the central column so its 5 rolls just for one part before i go all the way through the hallway, up two lots of staircases and 2 landings! massive job !!!

To do sums with wallpaper you need to work in figures of area.

To start you need to confirm your figures. A perimeter of 11m sounds about right for a small 3m x 3m room but what is the 26? Is it 26cm i.e. you mean 11.26m? A height of 70cm either means that you have a very very low room or that you are only wallpapering a small section of it or that you have made a mistake in your measurement... Once we have the right dimensions you can work out the area by multiplying the two together.

10m per roll and 53cm wide I assume has come from the wallpaper supplier and sounds about right. To work out it area you just multiply its length by its width. Google will do this for you if you can't do this in your head: http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=10m+x+53cm giving a result of 5.3m^2 (5.3 square meters).

Once you have figures for the area you want to cover and the area that one roll covers (5.3 m^2), you can divide one into the other to work out how many rolls you need.

If you want to start getting clever you can correct the calculation by removing the area of doors / windows but I wouldn't worry about that to start with.

If you only have a perimeter of 11.26 metres and are only wallpapering a 70cms height you will only need 2 rolls of wallpaper but check your measurements are you only doing the one wall??

No, seriously, it's a hallway, 14 sodding doors to restore- remember? Tiny little sections of wall between doors. I'm only papering up to the dado rail - 70cm. I think 3 rolls is right, which means for a change I can be as extravagant as I please! Hurrah!

It's got a sandstone surround, the original one seems to have been replaced.

I reckon it's got to be early to mid 1800's, but I'm still trying to work out how old the house is, as it's been extended around the late Georgian or early Victorian era. My engineer reckons it could have been a number of cottages (probably four) turned into one big house.

If I can work out how to upload photos, I'll add one!

oo can't wait to see... my house is from 1687 we have a carved sandstone plaque above the original door and as its a hall and II* listed its pretty notable in these parts so i guess we are lucky in that sense.. we do know that one wing of the house was added about 1880 .. but everything else we find is fascinating!

Hi,

Your fireplace and some of the others posted here are similar to this hobgrate, the smaller of two fires we found in our house.



This was found in the extension to the main building. From old maps we can date the extension to be post-1828. The fireplace should then date from after 1828. HOWEVER, things like grates can get moved around quite easily, as people then were not averse to 'doing up' their place, much as us moderns. Less fashionable styles would be relegated to the less important rooms (i.e. bedrooms or servants rooms) while the parlours, salons and drawing rooms might be fitted with the up-to-date model. I'm sure there was a market for refurbishment items even back then, so things will have been moved around between houses, too. There is therefore no certainty that the grate started life off in the location you found it in. In our example, the style of the decoration of this grate (the floral columns if that's the right description and overall lightness of style) point more towards later Georgian/Regency, so c. 1810, rather than Victorian. Your hobgrate too looks likely to be from around the same period.

If we are talking about wallpaper, lincrusta etc from the skirtingboard to the dado (chair) rail and the space to cover is 70cm (700mm) long then there are other considerations that appear to have been overlooked so far.
It isn't as simple as it has been made out.

What is the length of the pattern?

If you find the pattern length is, for sake of example, 120cm long then for each drop of 70cms there will be 50cm of waste/excess that will not be able to be used on the same project.
Or the drop may be greater than the pattern so that two lengths of pattern will be required for each drop... that will create a lot of waste.
