Any idea why my wall has bits of bricks set in black mortar? Im puzzled!

Hi, I have hacked off a bit more, but didn't see anything much.



But behind the row that actually looks like bricks there also seems to be a gap as if they are brick slips.

**Possibly the whole wall is brick slips stuck onto bricks?

I spoke to a structural engineer who didn't come up with anything much, but suggested it may have been to make a thicker wall.

(I am not sure why they would want to do this?)

Thinking about my old house in Yeovil, I had to re-mortar some of my brick 'slips', and although there was a band of stone at the top of the wall, I think it was brick inside so I reckon the ashlar stone blocks were about 4" deep and sat on a row of headers that closed the cavity, and that the band of stone was backed by bricks laid in stretcher bond, which looked much like your latest photo.

Wedi board is almost exactly the same (as far as it's possible to tell) as the Abacus board, it may be a bit cheaper. I got mine from Topps, where it's about the same price as Hardie Backer board - not the cheapest place, but they tend to have loads in stock and I can drive there in 10 minutes, saves on delivery charges.

Thanks, so my plan is to use 2 of these 12mm polystyrene/ cement coated boards above the bath using tile adhesive, wait until it has set and drill and screw 9 fixings per board.

Above that ill either skim or board/skim the uneven part of the wall up to the ceiling (that I have rebuilt), then paint that and tile on the wedi board.

As the walls are leaning outwards I'll need to pack the boards at the top more with cement based tile adhesive.

Does that sound ok?

Or is there an easier/ quicker way?
Eg plastic wall panels?
