The one in the picture was actually a little unfair, its a "deluxe rolled bonnet" from a 1971 Series 2A (one of the very last 2As) - it does look very similar to what became the standard SIII bonnet - it's the hinges that give it away. Sadly the rest of the vehicle is mouldering under an apple tree in my parents garden, waiting for me to finish the house, and buy a lock up, get a new chassis and bulkhead and find a suitably stupid engine to put in it...

Well, I think we can conclude that long term some more ventilation is necessary, probably for both ends, it just is going to come down to "how".
In the mean time I'll get on with surveying the flue for the open fire, and getting that squared away.

It's minus 10 Celsius in Sweden this evening. I think Anders Celsius must have devised his scale in the summer.and forgot how cold it would make the winter.

Right, an update:
Firstly I experimented by simulating the effects of the new hearth, by putting the grate on some 3" block. A small smoky fire was lit, and I am pleased to say that no smoke came into the room whatsoever, no matter what configuration of open and closed doors I messed around with. Given that this was achieved with a compromised flue, I'm rather pleased with what the end result will be once I get the flue repaired.
Speaking of which, I got round to some borescope playing today, first off, I owe my stonemason an apology, the work he did was spot on, the stack had beautifully rebuilt (including the feathers) all the way up the stack. He had even dressed the inside of the stack properly. The confusion from my torch peering was because he had re-used the original stone where possible which was blackened and so when peering with a torch looked like a shadow of a hole!
So, if not the stack, what was the cause of all this palaver? One missing feather, right at the base of the divide (ie. buried in the gable wall and well beyond the stonemason's scope of work). I suspect I shall find the offending lump it when I open up the old fireplace upstairs.
Measuring it with rods, it is about 5.5m off the ground level. I'm seriously tempted to just pull a couple of stones out of the gable wall for access and make the repair, as the rest of the flue is in particularly good nick. Alternatively, as soon as I have finished limewashing the spare room, the wife and I will be moving into that room so I can start work on the master bedroom, so I may be able to pull a couple of stones out of the chimney breast in the master bedroom and get access that way.
So, more work for the wicked - but at least the cloud of uncertainty is gone and I have a plan now!

I fancy a Series IIa, but it would need to be an earlier one with the headlights in the grille. Not as practical I know but I just like the look of it!
