We bought a grade 2 listed house four years ago complete with revolting diamond glazed upvc windows. From what I can gather, the windows were installed before the house was listed. We now want to extend the house and intend to replace all the windows. However, we have grown quite used to having double glazing and would ideally like to replace the existing windows with double glazed wooden windows. The diamond glazing are completely out of keeping as we found the remains of the original windows in the garden. They only had one glazing bar (Sussex windows?). I haven't had the conservation officer in yet but would be interested if anyone has any thoughts.

I think that the only person who can give a definitive answer is your CO.
It may be that the windows were installed before the house was listed, but recent listings aren't all that common.

If the place isn't listed (and certain conservation areas) then all the windows require is that they conform to building regs. No planning approval required.

Oh dear - you do realise that you'll be seeing inappropriate windows everywhere now, don't you? Just a fraction of a second's glance at some windows is all you need to condemn their disfiguring effect on an otherwise lovely building.

Can I just say as an outsider with a great interest in old buildings and a wish to learn the correct way to do things, I have found most of this forum brilliantly informative. However, sadly and boringly so often it is spoilt by a pedant or two going for the jugular when a point of view differs or someone suggest they may do something realistic (albeit depressing) e.g removing a fireplace to put it where it will be loved instead of leaving in situ to be trashed. I'm beginning to ignore input from certain posters I just can't take seriously any more despite credentials.... Too embarrassing to point anyone of like mind this way to share the wisdom imparted ..too embarrassing please could the childish squabbling stop...its dumbing down and a great shame! Or is it just me?

Yes it would be lovely if it was all a rose garden, but you should appreciate many have been posting here a very long time and what you see isn't always what it seems.
So it would be wise not to try to 'back seat moderate', especially as you have no idea of back story, history, or any way in which posters relate (or don't) to each other.

If you go to the user control panel of the forum there is a section called Manage Friends and Foes - you can add foes to this section and then you dont get the postings by individuals you consider unworthy of your attention.
As in life there is very seldom just 1 viewpoint on an issue.
If you find diverse answers frustrating you need a dictatorship not a democracy

As Nemesis said above, the only way to get a definitive answer is to talk to your CO.gibbon said:
What will and won't be allowed by your CO can't really be predicted by anyone else (unless it's a blatant attempt to destroy historic fabric). This applies both to your windows and your wish to extend the building.
By the way, don't necessarily expect your CO to come to you. They are often incredibly busy, and you may find it easier to get an appointment if you're prepared to go to the office and talk things over there first. If you do this, take photos, rough sketch plans and anything else that will help illustrate what you're proposing.
