Penners, its all economics. Regulations push up prices. As does open bribery in terms of planning gain and insisting on low cost elements on developments of a certin size. In terms of land usage, presumably builders would be forced to build terraces rather than waste a few meangingless feet between so called detached houses. Which was how it used to be....

It just seems to me that if we think we need to dictate how a house is built in terms of safety etc why not legislate for a minimium decent size of house. Some people argue that a lack of living space contributes to some social problems. That seems slightly more important than insiting on a minimum height of a bannister etc.

No minimum size limit on homes. Some of us like living in tiny houses. My van is parked next to 150sq m of house, but I'm still living in 12ft x 6ft in my van, until I can create a cosy little space in a small corner of it.

Small multifunctional spaces can be cheap, energy efficient and cosy.

The Smallest House in Great Britain, also known as the Quay House, is now a tourist attraction in Conwy, Wales. It measures 10ft by 6ft, and was lived in until 1900, by a 6ft 3in fisherman called Robert Jones.

The Davis semis look exactly like the house that my parents had in Bristol, in the late 40's/early 50's; Reedley Road, Westbury-on-Trym. The whole area was one huge building site - Bristol seemed to be expanding endlessly.

We didn't hev a gerahj, but my father (being a doctor) was one of the first people after the war to be allowed to buy a car. A second-hand Vauxhall Wyvern.

In those days my mum would give me a shilling, I could go down to the shops and come home with sweets, a new yo-yo, fish and chips and a copy of The Eagle. And I'd still have money in my pocket.

You can't do that today - d'you know why?

Not everywhere. I lived in Southgate for a few years as a nipper and it still looks pretty much as leafy as I remember:

Incidentally, Southgate tube station is an interesting listed building:

A SHILLING!! A whole shilling! I only ever got a penny or a halfpenny for the shop and that was in the 60s.

Actually, Salford has the distinction of being the only place in the country where I have suffered car crime. I was staying in the Travel Inn (now Premier Inn) at Salford Quays, and during the night some mindless idiot smashed my car window in order to steal a cheap BHS jacket that I'd chucked on to the back seat.

Still, I expect for Salford it was like a Saville Row suit. :wink:

That was amazing- those houses were rather beautifully made don't you think? But how depressing some of those same streets are now!
