Address and Council

I have contacted the council for confirmation of the postcode for 8 Market Place now it is finished all bar the shouting.

Got to speak to the chap responsible for "new addresses" today. As the town has developed around my building it appears he feels it has no right to bear the address 8 Market Place and it should have an address in Regal Rd. He wanted documentary proof that the building was previously called 8 Market Place saying he had found no records within the council.

I suggested that he talks to the conservation officer and confirms the address on the listing, after all we are the only 2* town centre residential property in Shepton Mallet. I also pointed out that probably as the address forms part of the listing that it is also protected. He replied "no comment".

What do you all think??

I don't have a street, nor do other houses in our village. Originally they all were simply called after owners I think! Our house has changed name since it was built too, and if I wish I believe I can alter it quite legally.

So simply miss out the line with the number and call it by the house name and town - that should fox him. Or even simply market place - as a descriptor.

I think it has, it was referred to by this address in Edward Strode's will I believe(the man who had the house built}.

1861 it was for sure

Sure about 1861

Cant find archaeologists report to confirm earlier, it is possible that they were references to the building by another description for the earlier events I recall on those dates.

Like most people in my area, we don't have street names, and if you're really up for some fun, you can be in two counties (and two countries) at the same time.

Are there any censuses (censi?) covering your area? The address might be noted. Or try Slater's/Pigot's directories, which also might be able to give you something tangible to show the council.

There are certainly lots of records of the address If I need to dig them out.

Ours was originally called 'Shropham Villa' according to Pevsner, but was changed to 'Shropham House' at some stage. Quite like the original name, but bears no resemblance to a villa on a lovely, warm, Southern European hillside

All a bit confusing, I can never find us on the census as suspect The White House was an attempt to make the house sound grander than it is sometime before the 1891 census, where it does exist, but no record found yet on earlier census and kind of stumped how to identify it!

Sadly the local authority are a bit more clever than that, they would notice quite quickly in my experience.

I'm afraid I rather doubt whether the address can be regarded as part of the listed fabric.

Our (Grade II) building has had a dizzying variety of names over the centuries/decades/years, as its function has changed from mill owner's house to ale house to pub to village shop to garage to shop again and finally back to private house.

Its last name change was only about 9 years ago - long after it was listed. I think our predecessor felt that "The Old Stores" was a little infra dig!

But, as Nemesis says, I think you can opt to change the name of your house is you want to. So why can't you call it whatever you like, so long as the Post Office has the address registered? A few keystrokes could sort out the council database problem.

Is there a 7 Market Place and a 9 Market Place, reasonably logically located? That could be a strong argument in your favour.

Well at the stage that 08 was added I believe that this predated the tranche of Victorian Building work. That would more than likely mean the building was still in its original form of main house and tenements seperate, so possibly the tenements were 08 2 ?

I wonder when the suffix of a letter of the alphabet came in? Perhaps this is another take on that before a standardisation occurred maybe ?
