Okay, a careful reading of old posts answered most of the above questions.
The answer seems to be - any fine sand, thoroughly dry and mixed with enough boiled linseed oil to make a stiff putty.
Out of interest I found this link for repairing Stucco which gives a variety of recipies for oil based mastics including one for 'Scotch Mastic' which is refered to as a synonym for Burnt Sand Mastic in a previous post.
As you can see from page 8 they use a drying medium which Biff reliable informs us is not vital and they also using whiting but I suspect that is just to create the appropriate colour for Stucco repair.
They also add this instruction which seems to be key
NB. All constituents of all the mixes given must be thoroughly dried, if necessary by gentle heating, and thoroughly mixed. Aggregates should be as fine as possible. Gauging with oil to form the paste, immediately precedes application.
Also found this reference - albeit brief - to using linseed oil with sand to make a mastic - so it must be true then!!
That is a very interesting PDF. Nice pictures of different types of stucco, stucco mixes. As one fussing with my modest stucco house it was quite interesting. The more you know the better prepared for the mundane I say.
