DaveBrigg - have you tried tightening the nut before you try undoing it? I realise that you've probably destroyed most of the nylon part by now, but presumably you can still get a grip on the metal sleeve with stillsons.

Sometimes a generous soak with easing oil, followed by a good heave in the tightening direction, will crack the corrosion sufficent to be able to undo a frozen nut.

Now you mention it, could it be a reverse thread? Not uncommon on rotating parts. My strimmer head is held on by a reverse-threaded bolt and can still, momentarily, catch me out.

Good point, FF! I have a feeling that my strimmer also has a left-hand threaded nut holding the head on.

Which reminds me of that old adage about cars. The most unreliable component is the nut behind the wheel.
