We have a Morning room, ballroom, front hall, back hall, garden hall, and cloaks hall....basically lots of random rooms with no obvious function.

We have a pantry, although my youngest keeps referring to it as a pantomime (no comment on my culinary skills)

I hesitate to ask, but what's the difference between a pantry and a larder?

We had what was always referred to as a larder - a walk-in room, small windows covered in fine mesh, half-tiled walls, tiled shelf around 3 sides and loads of hooks for hanging game. The tiles made it very easy to clean up all the . . . well, you know.

I tend to think of a pantry as a big cupboard full of tins and packets, but not anything raw or cooked.

But the real difference was that the dogs and cats would never seem interested in gaining access to the pantry but were always on the lookout for a way to slip into the larder.

The layout at ours was thrown into confusion when a new kitchen was built on the gable end in the late seventies. The rayburn was taken out of the inglenook in what is now a sitting room and reinstalled in the new kitchen, along with a run of fitted kitchen units and a sink on one wall (grim - fake orange pine effect, 'gold' trim .....).

There is a back kitchen which is still where the gas cooker, fridge and washing machine etc. live along with an amazing old metal 'English Rose' fitted kitchen unit and sink. We will rationlize this eventually, but for now makes for a lot of footsteps between 'back' and 'top' kitchens ......

I think that the inglenook was the original cooking hearth, nice to think that it continued to be used for that purpose for so long. I guess the back kitchen was originally used for dairying

Tsk... well obviously a larder is where you keep your lard and a pantry is where you keep your pants.

More likely the scullery - where wet and dirty work was done, veg washed etc. The slopstone would probably be there.

Our large pantry was probably also used as a place to butcher the pig (from the pigsty built in at the back of the barn part of the house) on the stone slabs and then keep the side of bacon on the wooden rack, where mice couldn't get at it. Some would be smoked in the chimney (hooks still there) and then hung on the hooks in the pantry.

Also used as a dairy, the same stone slabs are cool, and the mesh window allows for ventilation.

Lots of shelves on the walls for storage, and stone flooring.

We also have a storecupboard (under the stairs) off the living room. This room would originally have been the kitchen where cooking was carried out and used as a day to day living space too. This storecupboard has stone flooring and a niche in the wall for a candle.

This would have been originally where dry goods etc were kept. The larger pantry, off the scullery, was a 19th century addition.

The grander the house, the more rooms for these separate functions.
