From your remarks, I can see there is no universal way to describe a Period Property!

Why we needed a definition of a Period Property is because we are developing a website to show all the properties in the UK awaiting auction. One of our major property classifications is ‘Period and Listed Property’.

As there is no definitive way to describe a period property, we will have to go with the UK’s general 'perception' of a Period Property, which is that the property is old!

We just wanted to make sure our ‘Period Property’ classification was correct.
Your input was helpful in that it confirms there is no widely held definition of what a Period Property is. Thank you.

This is a real eye-opener. Age vs Style! I was expecting you to tell me a date, perhaps pre-1850 is considered period. Not that a brand-new property built in the style of an old property, or a 1938 brick built semi could both be considered a period property.
Why I asked, is that we are developing a website to list all the properties in the UK awaiting auction.
One of our property classifications is 'Period Property', designed to show all the period properties awaiting auction in the UK. So what is a period property? We need to know!

Currently our algorithms identify any properties where the auctioneer property description contains phrases like:
listed building, listed property, Grade I, Grade II, Grade B, Grade C, Category A, Category B, Category C, Palladian, period cottage, period farmhouse, period house, period property, period town house, period church, seventeenth, sixteenth, sixteenth century, thatch, vaulted ceilings, dating from 17, dating from 16, dating from 15, dating from 14, period building, original wooden beams, historic, etc, etc.
After the algorithms have identified a potential period property candidate, a human checks to see if the image of the property looks pre-Victorian. If it does then it is classified as a ‘Period Property’!

Is this an OK way to indentify period property, that would meet most people's expectations of what a period property is?

Your second post (quoted) was approved long after the discussion had hit the third page so nobody noticed it.

For that purpose it might be worth adding in Victorian and Arts and Crafts. Depends what you want to do with the section I guess, but most people would probably consider those Period Properties. My favourite is Arts and Crafts. If you get too many or too new that might be a bad idea and would need fettling. Or sub-categories if you have enough?

If discussions on here are anything to go by some of the other key words could be used to describe all sorts of other stuff.

Can Google do javascript now? Had a look at your source and that is all that is there. Probably wants sorting towards words and html unless you need to hide the content from search engines.

For what it's worth, Christine, I didn't think your posts were deceptive in the least. As you say, you did mention your website early on, and I didn't feel as if we were being "sold" something. I think it's been an interesting discussion.

And me. I have no problem with any commercial organisation that is helpful towards Period property.

As regards renovating and moving on, I never intended to move from our previous house. When we did, it wasn't the money spent that I regretted, it was the time, and the almost certainty that much of my work would be destroyed.
Money is infinitely replaceable.

I wasn't offended by Christine's posts either, and if a website makes it easier to find interesting period properties for sale that is a good thing in my eyes.
