A possible problem?

I'd love a shepherd's hut too! Wish we had some carpentry skills... But there again it's just a shed on wheels so maybe we can manage!
I like the idea of putting a fancy shed on our new allotment - everyone is so conservative there (well, it is Witney after all)

The best shed I had on my allotment was one that came from dear Joss when she moved from Burnham Market (see her post above). It was about 6' x 4' and when we erected it we split one of the long sides in two and made them into a pair of doors. I spent many happy hours with the doors open, sipping tea and surveying my plot. Ah, bliss!

Allotment sheds are sometimes attacked by vandals. On our site the only shed not to suffer was one rather like a shepherd's hut that had sturdy shutters covering the windows.

You know, I am thinking that maybe I could get a shed and fit it on the wheels from flea bay, then split the side down like you did to make a double door for it. Then perhaps I could stretch to a curved roof. Then all that needs doing is to paint it in the shepherds hut style--- mmm I wonder, not too impossible!

Apologies for my late arrival at this party, Moo. I've been washing my hair (note the singular noun).

While I agree that you would have to build your end-of-garden building in such a way as to give your neighbours access to their wall, I also think this shepherd's hut idea is straying beyond the bounds of the reasonably possible.

Even if you were able to install one (and the self-build idea appears to ignore the fact that you would still need to get a prefabricated steel chassis with wheels through the house), you would still have to consider how - when the neighbour requires access to his/her wall - you would actually move the wheeled hut. You can't get any kind of towing vehicle into the garden, and I venture to suggest that the idea of manoeuvring that heavy structure (which have been standing in one spot for many months or years) away from the wall by dint of human sweat and toil would be well beyond the capabilities of you and Mr Moo, even if younger family members were recruited to help.

It seems to me that there are a few critical questions to rethinking this conundrum:

* What do you want the hut/shed/building for - what function will it perform?

* How big is the garden?

* How much of the garden are you prepared to sacrifice to it?

If the structure has no foundations, such as a shed, I don't think you would need planning permission - it's a "temporary structure". Perhaps others more knowledgeable than me can confirm/deny this. But, as has already been pointed out, I don't think you could use your neighbour's house wall as part of the structure without his/her consent (and a legal document to this effect, to protect yourself).

One thought - you may feel that you wouldn't want to use this building in the winter, so how about a nice pavilion, that you can just take down at the end of summer?

Are there any cats locally? If so then the gap left behind the shed need only be cat-sized in order to keep vermin away. I suppose cat-sized roughly equates to broom-sized so that would do for cleaning behind it too. If the gap left beneath it were open at both ends then it's not too cosy for vermin either so they might choose to go elsewhere. I personally think your three foot space behind the shed in order to get access for weeding is excessive. The gap will get no light for any plants to grow, and you could lay a driveway fabric under it, like people do under decking to stop weeds.
Then you could build a normal shed, freestanding. If your neighbour actually wanted access to their wall then it would have to be moved, but you might just have to cross that bridge when you come to it. Perhaps ask them first if they were thinking of requesting access any time soon, just in case?
