Very big. You could drive a car through those pipes. Maybe a boar? I'm not to well up on Japanese mammals.

I thought it might be a cat as something slightly feline showed up later, but there are also critters called tanuki. That's usually translated as "racoon dog" although I always referred to them as "Osaka bears" !

Stylised ones made from pottery are common outside traditional restaurants, usually depicted with a bottle of sake and some other things.......
