. It's quite rare to have lapped boards they were mostly straight edged but I have seen it.

indeed, and a ton of effort to go to… strangely, this is the second home we’ve had with them. Our previous cottage, somewhere either side of 1600, original similar sized oak boards in the parlour, varying widths, but all lapped.

All the oak boards in this place are lapped, front and rear, 1st and 2nd floors.

The doors added when it became a dwelling are also lapped boards.

The look in fairly good condition. Odd, they normally scrape the top face, Im guessing not so much for aesthetics but for ease of cleaning.

The ones on the first floor are largely great, aside the shrinkage.

Funny, how thick are they? I have found all of the lapped boards have been thinner, 15 to 20mm, the more common square edged boards have been thicker sometimes over 25mm

Can’t be bothered to trek back up there with a torch and a measure right now…! But about an inch…. They’re certainly not excessively thin boards.

Nice. And a 450 yr old English oak board at 14mm is as strong as a new board at 22mm, incredibly hard.

Ha! Ive seen a few 1500s oak doors, and yes the oldest are simply made from lapped floor boards.

The hinges to that door look like they were done by the apprentice... but considering they are made from brittle pig iron, they appear to have done their job for the last few centuries.

This particular door is the lowest status of all… shorter, less moulding on the ledges, wasn’t to an important room… it’s not my favourite by a long shot!
