A boiler shock

You cant use a chimney for a new boiler.
Either a vertical or horizontal flue is the only option.

See my earlier post - apparently Kidd boilers can be used with a conventional chimney, but they are very large and I'd bet on them being very expensive.

We are considering buying a very expensive (£5,000) heat bank to run with solar and wood fired heat.It worries me that the heat exchanger element will last only 5 years!Surely that cannot be true?

My guess is your heatbank is a.k.a. a thermal store e.g. a big tank of water?
These use coils of copper pipe in a larger tank of water to transfer the heat from the source into the tank and other coils to feed it to radiators etc.
This is the same principal as a domestic hot water cylinder.
If I'm right the design is completely different and you have nothing to worry about if not post a link and we may be able to help.

Likewise my heat pump has two heat exchangers in it. One operates at a max of 20°C and the other 45°C and just have water passing through them. I'm not worried about either of them failing.

Heat exchangers in condensing boilers operate at far higher temperatures with corrosive condensate to worry about which is why they fail.
