Do not confuse lower voltage with less power.
It is not the voltage you need to consider but the wattage (power).
A 12volt 100 watt lamp will consume the same amount of power as a 240volt 100 watt lamp.

Correct, as far as the lamp itself is concerned, but the transformer that converts 240volts to 12 volts will not be 100% efficient. This means that to supply the 12V bulb with 100W, more than 100W must be provided by the 240V circuit.

Fortunately some folk are taking it seriously. 55 Greenpeace people have climbed onto the roof of the Houses of Parliament this afternoon and planning to stay the night. Tomorrow MPs return from their summer break and the government's own Committee on Climate Change will publish a progress report on UK carbon emissions.

Biff, I only really posted the BBC info as an example of why 'the debate' is not over. I would guess that far more people read the BBC news than Realclimate so, rightly or wrongly, that's more influential in forming people's views and opinions.

That's a really constructive way of dealing with the issue.....

There was another interesting article in the Sunday Times about a group of scientists/researchers (the authors of Wikinomics)...who whilst being in no doubt about climate change are intensly critical of the climate 'models' and describe them as incredibly crude tools. As I say, they are 'believers' who specialise in building models about anything (with their basis in mathematics), if they don't think the models are a good basis for projection, then I think it raises some questions

Many thanks for the electrical explanations, which were far easier to follow than O level physics, where the teacher explained by using the idea of water pipes. You have confirmed my fear that when all the kitchen lights are turned on they consume more power than the rest of the downstairs combined. However, they are in two sets, with separate switches, so most of the time we can get away with only using half. The fluorescent tube in the garage which houses the woodburner will stay switched off between regular visits to refill with broken pallets. This alone should reduce electricity use for lighting by more than 10%; rationing the playstation may be harder.
I'll work on the poem, but I'm struggling for a rhyme for 'incandescent'
