I have new neighbours. They moved in last week. I don't know how many are living there but I have an embarrassing problem with them and don't know how to address it.
Perhaps the background would be a good idea. My house and their's were once a 4 cottages built for the workers on the farm that existed behind us. Over the years mine became one house and next door was a shop with a flat above. When I moved in with my OH 24 years ago the flat was occupied by the daughter of the shops owner and apart from 2 years she has always been my neighbour. The shop moved to other premises several years ago and next door was changed into one house.
A small bedroom at the back of my house was used as an office and we became aware that we could not only hear when anyone went to the toilet but could also hear their conversations. As we worked during the day when next door were out it wasn't really a problem. The company that installed their bathroom were friends and when I told them the problem they said it was caused by cupboards that had worked as soundproofing had been removed.
I now realise that my ex next door neighour had a downstairs loo installed before she sold the house. I can now hear every time someone goes to the toilet upstairs or down and every time their boiler fires up. She very rarely stayed there over the last few years and lived with her fiance in his house. Soundproofing my side is unlikely to work where the loo seats are concerned. The boiler I can tolerate.
I think I need to tell them but how? I'm sure they'll be mortified as I would be.
