I'm about to make a start on the kitchen and am having trouble figuring out what to do with the window. The rear of the house is roughly 1830 to 1850 but none of the windows are original.
To the left of the photo I plan to move the glass doors at least 6 feet inwards to expose an external door for fire egress and to improve the appearance of that area.
To the right the shed leading has been cut into the brick and the window lintel in a straight line so it will be a bother to remove the shed completely. I'm thinking about replacing it with a short porch or utility room.
Here is a close up of the window. It must once have been a sash window, wider than the window above. Going a bit lower on the inside would be helpful as ground levels are around a foot lower inside, and given two lower courses of brick would have been a stone sill that puts the original opening at the right height. But the kitchen has no other windows and is a little dark so I am nervous about making the window narrower. I do have planning permission for a sash window on the north wall around the corner to the right should I want to do that.
I have been going around in circles a bit, torn between window the same width but deeper (for which we have planning) which would be easy but would maintain an awkward meeting with the shed, or going back to a sash of original proportions and sorting out the lighting with some LED magic or an additional window. What would you do?
