Over the past four years since I have owned my house (about 300 years old, Grade II listed) periodic flooding in my cellar has become gradually worse and worse. I investigated and discovered some cracked plumbing, which I have fixed but still the water appears. On investigating the corner of the cellar I discovered a square flagstone that rang hollow when tapped. On lifting this I exposed what I can only think is a sump of some description, about 18" v 12", approx 18" deep and brick lined. This was chock full of mud, which I baled out hoping that the problem was now cured. Not so. The water now appears through a crack between flags a bit further away and continues to fill (and overflow) the sump. It does seem worse after heavy rain and the water that fills the sump seems to be slightly oily and has an unpleasant, sharp smell to it - but I don't think it's sewage. As my next door neighbour doesn't suffer from anything like this I can't think that it's the water table. Any ideas as to who I can speak to to determine where all this water is coming from? Could it be a cracked drain or something similar?
