Hi All
I am hoping for some advice on re-instating cast iron guttering on our Welsh farmhouse dating to 1884. It currently has old grey plastic guttering and, apart from now leaking badly, it looks awful! I have bought a load of reclaimed cast iron guttering in good condition overall but needing some refurbishment. I have put together a list below outlining how I plan to do this but, having never done it before, I would be very grateful if those with a bit of experience in this area could let me know if I have got anything wrong or left anything out! Many thanks in advance!
Here is my list:-
Gutters :
1) Scrape off flaking paint & rust with wire brush to get back to a sound surface.
2) Prime with red oxide paint
3) Paint outside of gutters & brackets with two coats of black gloss paint
4) Paint inside of gutters with black bituminous paint (with the exception of the joint sockets - paint these with black gloss as per the outside of the gutters)
5) Fit gutter brackets to fascia with first bracket 150mm from the edge (Question: what should the spacing be for the rest of the brackets? Two or three brackets per length of gutter?)
6) Use linseed oil putty to seal gutter joints and bolt together with M6 25mm zinc plated gutter bolts.
7) Fall should be 1cm in every 3.5m
8) Once installed, touch up paintwork where necessary with black gloss (outside) and black bituminous paint (inside).
Downpipes :
1) Prime and paint as per outside of guttering (inside of downpipes obviously can't be painted)
2) Use linseed oil putty to seal joints of outlets and bends
3) No putty needed for joints between lengths of downpipe (?) - instead pack joint with bits of lead.
Thanks in advance for any help and advice!
Kind Regards - Matt
