Hi all,
At the weekend I decided to investigate one of our boarded up fireplaces. This was done by removing the skirting board and cutting a hole in the plaster board behind the skirting, so as not to smash a massive hole in the wall. I used a torch and the camera on my mobile phone to see what was inside (who said they were useless).
As well as the skeleton of an unfortunate bird I was able to see that there was evidence of an original hob grate, however it is no longer intact. One of the legs (if anyone can provide a technical term...) is missing and the bars at the front between the two hobs (again, technical term greatly appreciated...) are broken. I was unable to see if any of these missing parts are in there.
Are there any ways in which we could get this repaired? Would a blacksmith be able to copy the leg and perform the rest of the repairs? Or is the only way of having a fireplace to get a reclaimed one or reproduction?
Also, does anyone have experience of inserting a reclaimed fireplace into a grade II listed property? Is this generally approved by conservation officers even though it may not always be appropriate?
Thanks,
Stuart
