So said Ted Moult in the 80s when advertising the products of a firm that shall be nameless being installed at the Tan Hill Inn, England's highest pub.

I see said firm is now advertising on telly again, as having "upgraded" the double glazing shown in the 80s ads.

At what point does "upgrade" merge into "replace"? Or did the claim that you would only have double glazing fitted "once" refer to the fact that the people who had it fitted have long since moved on?

There's some splendidly bizarre choices of "appropriate" tone and surreal juxtapositions in the article:

...it featured Ted Moult, a Derbyshire farmer who became improbably famous after winning Brain of Britain, who appeared on the first episode of Countdown - Channel 4's opening programme - and is credited with the notion of pick-your-own strawberries.

Moult, who was 60 when he shot himself in 1986, watched a feather fall gently to the ground behind the Tan Hill's new windows. The catchline's still memorable: "You only fit double glazing once, so fit the best, fit Everest."

Though this might be familiar:

Last year, however, new pub owners Tracey Daly and Mike Peace decided that the windows needed minor repairs. Believing that part of the television deal was that the work had a lifetime guarantee, they contacted Everest.

A young "engineer" duly arrived, said he'd never heard of Ted Moult, knew nothing about a lifetime guarantee and demanded that they pay up front...

"We were told that we weren't a priority call-out," says Mike. "It appeared that we weren't important to them at all."

The people who live on Tan Hill hadn't given up hope of conquering Everest, however. A few weeks later BBC's Watchdog started sniffing around - "I don't know how they heard about it," says Tracey - and things began to happen.

Not "minor repairs" in the end though:

"Negotiations are still continuing, but it looks like they're going to fit us new sash windows and do a remake of the commercial," says Tracey.

I went to Tan Hill a few years ago, and noted the dire state that the placcie windows frames were in. There were however a few nice looking wooden frames which I had hoped they were gradually changing to. It would appear this was not the case.

Took a photo of the Ted Moult photo that was above the bar, as it is a PBR*. For those who were around in the 80s indie music era, they may recall a song by Half Man Half Biscuit called D'Ye Ken Ted Moult.

That reminds me of the time of Barry Bucknell on 1960s tv with his DIY series.
In the series he "improved" a whole house that was quite near where I lived in Ealing Common.
Within 18 months after the series finished the house that had once been proclaimed a DIYers pride and joy and an example to us all was shabby and delapidated.
There was paint peeling off the woodwork and outside walls (painted brick) with distorted hardboard decorative features adding to the dismal sight.
It looked awful even to my young untrained eye.

IMO he, above all others, was responsible for more damage and destruction of ordinary housing by rubbish improvements than anyone else.
