yorkshire range

I'm not sure how to post photos everytime I tried it just came back with file too large,. I've put the photos in my sisters photo bucket link below
anyway we have a yorkshire range in our back room, and I love it,only problem is we can aford to keep it lit, it will use the same amount of coal and wood in a day to what we use in a week on our other fire, This room is our coldest it s a large room single extension with the range, the Chimney going straight up,which also means rain/snow come down as well.
I've been tring to come up with a solution to this problem, but I keep drawing a blank. I really do not want to get rid of the range as its part of the house,but we do need something better to heat this large room.
The only thing I could come up with was could I get a stove built into this somehow ?

Presumably the chimney isn't lined, and the smoke goes straight up into the chimney? I wonder whether an insulated liner could make it more efficient.
Is is possible to keep it as a back-up heater rather than one that's used daily? Do you have any central heating in the house?
Is there any other way to make the room warmer? What is the construction of the room? 9" solid brick perhaps? What is the feasibility of adding breathable (or non-breathable) wall insulation? Did you say it is a single storey extension? With a flat roof or pitched? Is the ceiling insulated at all?
There is a limit on the size of files which can be attached in the forum, although I can't remember off the top of my head what it is. I use a free-to-download program called Image Converter to reduce the size of files before I attach them. Or using Photobucket's fine too.

The chimney is not lined, there is a large void ( about 24" )above the range before it narrows to the chimney. I'd looked into getting it lined,but the company didn't seem to know how to do it with this large void( I'm no chimney expert so did not question him ) I've been trying to find out if I could get a made to fit stove fitted into where the fire would be.
The room is solid brick and stone walls, pitched stone slab roof, stone floor. With 1 radiator. It's very much in need of a lot of work, but due to costs and money problems it's the last room that will get done, so main aim is to keep the room warm, which in winter even with the radiator you can still see your breath in the air.

So are you looking for a temporary fix while you get together the funds to tackle this room, or are you looking for the permanent solution?
It might be worth getting a chimney pot with a rain cowl on, to prevent rain and snow coming down the chimney. You could get a chimney balloon to stop draughts from the chimney if you are not using the fire.
You could install a larger radiator, without too much upheaval; panel radiators are quite cheap from Screwfix, you could even get a second-hand one off Ebay. Perhaps some internal acrylic-sheet secondary glazing, if the room is single glazed. Even thick curtains will help. How about rugs? Is there a ceiling void which you could insulate with ordinary loft insulation from a DIY store? Those are all reasonably low-cost ways of making it more habitable. I really wouldn't remove such a wonderful period feature.

As I understand it, fuel burns with air and the hot gases go up the flue. The way that the rate of burning is controlled is by shutting off the air*. In general the flue should be large enough to accomodate the hot gases. There are side effects such as a hot flue, causes to gases to rise faster and suck air through the fire causing it to burn faster. Not required in your case. In your case there is a huge air flow possible over the top of the fire causing the fuel in this area to burn really fast. The best you can do is to blank all the grills off below the fire in the vain hope of reducing the airflow and hence the burning rate. Try baco foil.
* thats why the high efficiency wood burners/multi fuel stoves have their fire behind glass, so the air is totally controlable.

I'm looking for a permanent solution with the heating of this room, and you don't need to worry, I've got no intention of ripping the range out, it's part of the house and it's history. Just trying to get ideas. One of my ideas would be to get a made to measure wood burner that would fit into the into the grate of the stove, but so far I've drawn a blank on that one..

I've lived with a smaller version of range like that and it ate coal like no tomorrow.
It was impossible to prevent the fire burning itself away because the iron parts were not symmetrical with each other and let in air like a sieve.
The flues were also leaky above and behind the fire so I wouldn't recommend trying to seal it up.
The flue gas had so many routes, nooks and crannies and if you were successful at controlling the combustion air you might generate a lot of carbon monoxide held within the casing.
It might escape into the room somehow or accumulate in the oven.
I doubt you would be able to build a modern heating device within the stove because of flue problems.
You would be better off resigning yourself to having a fine looking range and provide the heat in the room somewhere else.

My brother had similar problem with the fireplace in his lounge although it wasn't a range. His solution was to install a register plate to reduce the amount of warm air disappearing up the chimney and he bought a modern log burner from Aarrow that fitted into the rather small grate. It chucks heat into the room, looks OK and he didn't have to take his original fireplace out.

I'm sure you could make a metal platform on top of the current fire grate and fit a small woodburner on it. Fit a register plate above it and line the chimney with a flexi liner that hangs from the top and so doesn't put any weight on the stove, and that would work fine.

Or, if that is too big, then maybe this Hobbit Stove

Another thought, not sure that it meets Building Regs, but could you stand a woodburner in front of the range? The hearth would need to be extended. I seem to remember from the Building Regs though, that there's a minimum distance required between the woodburner and anything around it. Also you can't have a bend in the flue within a certain distance of the top of the woodburner.

Yes that's what I've been thinking about, I do like the look of the hobbit stove, I'll look into that in the new year.

I always get Yorkshire range envy when I watch the food historian Ivan Day cooking on his! I'm amazed by all the "tools" he has to assist cooking on the range.
I'm sure it must have cost him forty quid in coal just to cook a chicken :lol:

I'm sure it did :shock: I tried to get the oven up a cooking temp,to do some cooking it took 2hours if it even to get warm inside the oven, and I know all the drafts where open and it was drawing heat up and around the oven. I guess that's why they where never let burn out.

Part of the flue gases are directed around the oven and can get blocked up.
When I tried to do what you did the oven never warmed up.
I discovered all the inner flues were completely blocked with dust.
When I cleaned them out the oven did get warm, almost hot, but the fire needed feeding so much more than before I decided never to light it again.
