yellow stain

I am refurbishing a victorian house and I seem to have a yellow stain in one of the exterior walls in the lounge (The exterior wall is made out of brick)- I have cleaned the wall and then painted over it, but it keeps coming back. Please help.

It sounds like the stain is the result of damp penetrating the outside wall. This may well be an old damp stain that is now dry, but you should check to see if it an ongoing problem. Examine the wall outside and any window sills or frames near the stained area. If there are any obvious cracks or gaps where water could get through make sure they are sealed up. However, the damp problem may have been previously rectified but if you are painting over it with emulsion paint then the stain will always come through. You need to use a stain block paint or spray, or even just and oil based paint to hold back the stain. Good luck.

Oil based paint blocks a lot of stains. If it doesnt, stain blocking paint.
