Wooden Floor preperation

We have an old wooden floor which has (in a previous life) been covered with a vinyl type tile. we have lifted these tiles but it has left a black, bituminous type residue. This residue is slightly tacky in parts and will not chip off. What is the easiest way to remove this prior to stripping? The "experts" we've had round just want to sell laminate flooring; not what we want!

Strippers of Sudbury have a product that they say will remove bitumastic paint. I haven't tried it myself.

Please be aware that Klingstrip may darken/stain your floor as it is caustic, I would not reccomend this product to use on wood that is to be finished naturally.

The other strippers mentioned in the link are solvent type, similar to Nitromors etc. They can be used with coarse wire wool. Do not wash off with lots of water as suggested, this will possibly damage your floor/electrics etc. and may cause trion stains around the nail holes. NB410 and NB510 are okay to use. I have found the only way to remove bitumastic paint realistically is to sand it off. Please see my peice on stripping and sanding in the finding out section.
