Woodburner installation

Hooray! We have had a successful completion of the first stage of our woodburner installation--chimney breast opened, rendered and plastering, chimney pot replaced, chimney repaired and 904 liner installed! Hearth to be decided--off to the stonemason and then the stove!!

Many thanks to Flyfisher for support and recommendation of the company--as he said they are excellent. Private message me if you want to know more--not sure how far they travel though--probably around Norfolk/Essex

Xanthe, so far I have looked at riven slate, marble, travertine and reclaim pamments. The Stonemason's quote for the slate and marble pieces have come in at around £200.00 and the reclaim pamments came in at around £50. I am going to look at Fired Earth travertine and riven slate as a comparison. Difficult decisions and very infuriatingly I missed a lovely piece of reclaim marble at a knockdown price of £30.0 .
Pamments are just not quite right for this room as they are rather too rustic in appearance.

Hi Jocelyn, can I ask how you went about choosing your wood burner?
Is it the people you bought it from the same who are installing it?

It's something I'm wanting to do, but haven't even begun to look at makes/models/prices/installers!

I checked out 3 local installers , funnily enough, all three recommended the same stove, based on the size of our living room.

Having chosen my preferred installer, I then visited a couple of nearby showrooms to compare the stoves.

I am more than happy with our choice of Clearview Pioneer 400, it suits our requirements.

A friend of mine in Yorkshire has selected a Hunter Slimline to suit his requirements and as recommended by his installer, he is well pleased.

What did the installer quote for installing the stove once the fireplace, liner and any vents were in place? I've just had a quote for about £600! £450 plus materials. I can't see it being more than half a day of work so I'm holding fire until the chimney sweep gets back from his holiday for another quote. But a budget price would be handy.

We have just paid the installer plus assistant, £1,114 (incl.vat) for 3 days work: Break into the chimney breast, repair shoddy internal brickwork, caused by bad building, and previous owner's installation, new lintel, render opening, supply and installation of 904 liner, replace missing brickwork, 3 courses, on chimney, replace missing chimney pot, bird guard, prepare surface for hearth tiles. Clear site completely.

All that remains now is the actual stove--£1,112 and any additional expense involved with laying my choice of hearth tiles. I imagine that might be around the £200. mark .The hearth area is only a meter squared so should not take long to do, and my choice of tiles are: Tuscan Travertine or Italian riven slate from Fired earth, which works out amazingly cheaply ! Check them out.

That sounds very cheap for all that work - the going rate for just fitting the liner and installing the stove without any other work seems to be about that (£1000 was the cheapest I could find). Well done!

Having fitted the liner myself and with the fireplace in good order and room ventilation in place I managed to find a hetas fitter for £350 plus parts to fit the stove. I suppose total installation costs including my bits will be about £850 (half the first quote which gives me spare money to do more conservation somewhere else), but that doesn't include the 4 days it took me to stabilise the chimney. The stove should be here in 2 or 3 weeks.

Looking forward to some warmth in the winter as I'm tight on heating as well. Wood is free following tree work a couple of years ago. The electric log splitter was £250 but is so much easier than an axe.
