hello, iam trying to gain an aged look on new skirting boards, ive been advised to use a water base stain and build colour up, as othere stain to solid in colour. can a water base stain be mixed with a spirit base stain if i cant get colour dark enough with the water base stain. eg put on water stain then when dry add spirit bas just one coat.

try having a look at the osmo wood wax transparent stains they have a standard range and they are all intermixable if you are trying to achieve something different

We have successfully used Osmo OOO which is very thin mixed with the same sort of natural pigments with which you would colour limewash or distemper. Obviously you would be wise to experiment on some off cuts before you comitt yourself. The other way ( if you want the 'stripped pine' look) is to paint on some thin limewash. The alkali gives a pleasant aged appearance. When dry just finish with Osmo hard waxoil. Mike.

To answer your original question: no, you shouldn't mix water- and spirit-based stains.
If you simply want to make the pine look older, try this technique (on a scrap piece first, to see if you like it): bash it about randomly a bit with a bunch of keys, then wipe it with cold tea. Depending on the strength of the tea, this doesn't impart a strong colour to it, but it's quite a subtle aging effect. The "dings" caused by the keys make the colour "strike" where they are, to give an old distressed look.
