Wisteria wires

We have got the garden finished almost and will be putting in a Wisteria against the face of the building. I need to put supporting wires in. Those wires need to be strong enough to support the plant and also they need to be corrosion/stain resistant. Stainless steel would seem the obvious option but no one seems to sell a specific s/s wire for this purpose. Can anyone suggest what would be appropriate?

I have a wisteria. The blessed things take a great deal of training, pruning and generally keeping in bounds. It's beautiful when it's in flower, but that's not for a great deal of the year. Couple of weeks in late May, possibly a later flowering of not quite so much...

Consider a clematis instead - the sort you prune in February by cutting back to a couple of feet. Trust me, in years to come you will thank me if you do... <IMG SRC="http://www.periodproperty.co.uk/discussing/smileys/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT="">

Try scrapyards if you can and look for small dia. whinch wire. Better still buy the whole whinch, hide it discretely near the wisteria so you can tension it if you have to. ( around 2050 ).

I would have thought that normal galvanized fencing wire would be perfectly adequate? There are fencing wires attached along an old wall at the back of my house that have proably been there for about 40 years.

My wisteria is about 25' high. I use clips that you would use for fixing plastic plumbing pipes to joists. They look a bit like electrical cable clips but bigger and round in shape. The round clips are the perfect size for training shoots and by the time the shoots get too big for the clips they are self supporting so I find I don't need any support down below. (so to speak)

Stainless wire is widely available from yacht chandlers, but plain galvanised wire is a lot cheaper and will last for many years. Fishing boats traditionally dont bother with stainless, just galvanised and they dont have much problem event covered in oggin all the time.

This is a job I have to do soon. I'm a bit wary about drilling holes in our lovely new lime render but I did it for the guttering without too much drama.

How much support will the vines need - the smaller the hole I have to make the better It sounds like the plant is self supporting once it's a good size.

Should I use stainless rings because of the caustic effects of the lime? I don't want the eyelets to rust and therefore split the render.

How far apart should the wires be?

Bumping this thread to ask… what’s best practice for putting supports for such wires into the walls, what kind, fixing into stone or into the mortar? I feel like I don’t want to break the house by going and drilling holes in it… which I know if a bit silly really.
We need to upgrade the support system for our own wisteria a bit (house new to us), and get something secure in place for the rose on the front.
