Hi, after the tragedy that is my house façade, I thought I would share some better news.
The is the library window replaced. The windows for the façade are have been made by the same joiner and will be installed soon.
Timber sliding sashes, double glazed. Cheaper than plastic

Yes, I know I have to paint it

Very nice! Must be satisfying to see those horrid aluminium windows go.

I need to replace some nasty 1980's softwood casements here at some point. Not very high on the list though, they are at least tucked away round the back of the house.

You were lucky that the box frames survived! The new window looks abosolutely excellent, as does your house interior. I'm sure the new windows will make the facade look much better too.

Ha, well I am de-modernising as I call it.
The Lord only knows what the previous owner (war hero, bought it in 1951) was thinking...

All the ground floor boards and tiles are gone. Luckily the hearth tiles in the library survived, but in the sitting room he had actually taken out the hearth (there was a 70s gas fire, subject of a further post, I think)

so the chimney piece is slate - Edwardian and absolutely correct for the room (the shadow of the original was still there). It was painted to look like marble, but the finish was so badly damaged that I had to strip it off. Took me days of paint stripper and fine sandpaper. The tiled insert came from ebay locally (though originally from Yorkshire). I have another in the sitting room, which has it's original marbelling - will post soon

They both look absolutely right for the room. I too put in a marbelised slate surround in my house. Not quite as grand as yours. THe marbeling was quite good, arpart from on the horizontal lintel below the shelf, so I had a go at doing the marbeling myself!
