Would that all historic houses had such a custodian.

Edit - the roof verge... should really have been rubbed out to show the tile edges. But having 'sacked your roofers' - a traumatic decision I guess - the aesthetic shortcoming is understandable. If, as you mention, you intend to paint the verge, the first coat needs to be a alkali resist, otherwise the paint may come off.

Hi Ivor,
Very well spotted. Yes: they should have been done and its been really irking me that it wasn't. The new roofer did the job when I was traveling and I was gutted to get back to see it like that. Its a lesson learned: having begged him to take the job on, I had little leverage to get it done to my own spec. Seemingly, roofers can choose their work at the moment.

In fact, I've rubbed back the garden side after the event, with a grinder. A job so traumatic (and loud) that I haven't had the stomach to repeat it on the road side..yet. It also didn't make a lot of difference.

All that said, we only changed 30% of the verge and the rest of the verge edge is similarly mortared up. It having been similarly bodged in the distant past... The black bitumen paint on these parts has been removed with a grinder, but the tile edges here are still hidden. So, I've been comforting myself that my new verge tiles at least it matches what I've got elsewhere. Trouble is, the roofer could have used less mortar and blended it in with the existing verge. So, I'm sticking with what I got, I'm leaving it unpainted and hoping that it'll lichen up over time.

Of all the work done, I'm least happy with the roof. The new verge tiles kick up and sit on a thick bed of mortar. (wipes a tear away...) The porch roof still needs attention. A job that I'll tackle when the dust settles on this project and I have time to find someone who cares...

I am full of admiration--what a great project.

Shouldn't worry about the verges and the amount of mortar--you are probably very aware of it because you've been so closely involved with the work--other people wont even notice.

which in my detached ignorance slightly bothers me because limewash is transparent/sinks in, and the extent to which it sinks in depends on the substratum. Wonder if it might look patchy over the new and old render.... especially when the wall is wet.

The lead work hasn't happened, Doug. Three different experts have advised that water ingress is due to porous bricks and open flues in that stack. Their view is that replacing the lead won't solve the problem. So, I'm merrily ignoring it.... :roll: :roll: :roll:

First coat of lime wash today. Just lime wash and some casein to improve binding to the variable substrate.

Firstly, what a pig of a job. The thought of another 4 coats is painful. Secondly, its WHITE. Not just white REALLY WHITE. It looks like an iced bun. And, I still don't think white suits the house. I'm even more sure that golden brown buff colour is the way to go. The next coat will get some pigment.

Mmmmmmmmm, buns, although I agree it isn't probably the best look for the house, which is otherwise looking amazing, well done.

Outstanding work, Paul! But I should be careful about brandishing the "F" word around. A period property that's finished? That'll be the day...!

Incidentally, I quite agree with Joss about the verges. That's the kind of detail that one tends to get obsessed with during the work, but nobody ever notices for the rest of eternity.

Yes, it's very annoying when you make a batch of things for visitors and then when your back is turned someone munches half of them.
