Window renovation - Beading

I'm renovating our (8) windows prior to a pro coming to strip back and paint. They have been neglected for years before we moved in, and latterly mistreated with fence paint!

Every strip of timber beading is rotten to a crisp. I'm struggling to find something off the shelf. It has little profile, 19mm deep and 4mm thick. It protrudes from the frame unlike the newer part of the house with the same (but larger) windows which has standard wedge, thicker, flush beading. I guess I could get some made but trying to keep costs down.

Would a standard, off-the-shelf, wedge beading detract (if possible) from the windows? It's unlikely to protrude from the frames like the current beading.

Does anyone have any tips for installing the beading when I find it? I was intending to mitre, thin bead of silicon, apply beading, pin and fill pin holes. Should I treat the beading with anything prior to the painter coming in a few weeks?

Personally, I would have thought that any reputable DIY shed (if that's not an oxymoron) would have a beading that would be perfectly adequate for those windows. They don't appear to be particularly 'period' - I'd be tempted to match the new windows rather than replicate the old.

Your suggestion about pinning and filling seems sensible - is there a better alternative to silicone for the joints?

As for colour; with those windows I'd be tempted by any of the four million shades of white or off-white (3,999,995 of which look the same) - certainly a light, brighter colour to enliven the brickwork and tone with the lovely pointing rather than their current dark colour. But that comes down to personal preference: here we have black window frames because they disappeared more within the timber framing (which is also in Victorian mourning).

Not sure about silicone as paint won't stick to it at all, so the pro coming round might not thank you of you did that. Are the units double glazed. if so then butyl putty is good to bed the beads against the glass before pinning, otherwise normal putty, or in fact if they are single glazed then you could just putty the front and forget the beading! I don't think the overhanging beading adds much to the window, a flush one would look ok I think, or even a wedge shaped one to imitate a bead of putty if you go down that route.

Also if you wish to replicate what is there, it looks like sash window parting bead, available at most places that have off the shelf mouldings for sale.

Thanks both. Yes they're 16mm double glazed so I think I'll try the Butyl putty approach. Thanks for the parting bead tip, although I think you're right, I think I'll go for a flush wedge.

Just finished another evening of successful butyl puttying for the flush wedge beads I've created from a supply of beads acquired from a well known auction site for next to nothing.

It's incredibly therapeutic, so much more so than faffing with mastic or silicon, and the finish is very satisfying. Spliced my first sill and tenoned my first frame corner at the weekend. Progress is painfully slow but it's getting quicker with each window. Just the four upstairs ones to go, that's 24 panes or 96 beads I might hold off until the paint job before I post pictures. Flush wedge shape beads were the right call. Thanks for the input.
