Window issue

I’m new here and would appreciate some help!
We have a three hundred year old cottage that we bought one year ago and has been unlived in since. I noticed a crack has formed around the window and have noticed some dust coming out when opening and closing. The frame is wooden. Any ideas?! We’ve had a problem with damp in this room

It's interesting the crack is a constant inch away from the window trim. The window design was probably different before and they've thrown some stuff in to fill the gap. While it's very annoying they couldn't just make a window like the original the gap can probably just be filled in and painted over.

The damp issues are probably more of a something to sort out. Unlikely to be solely due to a poorly installed replacement window unless the damp is only near the window.

The mitre corners suggest UPVC windows rather than wooden, the crack being between the original fabric and whatever they used as filler to where the replacement windows finished. It's not impossible these are the third set of windows that your property will have had.

Damp issues more likely to be from it not being lived in. Has it had any heat and ventilation whilst empty? Is the roof sound and is there any evidence of slow leaks from pipes?

Agree with Stevers, especially as there are no trickle vents, damp is more likely to be related to lack of heating and ventilation then. Crack is nothing to worry about IMO
