will paint crack front door?

We are planning to paint our south facing front door and garage doors a dark plummy colour but our neighbours said that the sun could split the door if it was a dark colour due to the extra heat it would absorb. This apparantly happened to their friends' door. We're not fussed about our current front door but we were planning on having a hard wood door made in a traditional style in the near future and we would like to take the best care of it obviously. Also, the garage doors are a very old very thick tongue and groove styl so maybe there would be more give in them?

Does anyone else have any experience of this?

I think there is an element of truth in what your neighbour said.
But cracks are much more likely to occur if the door panels are loose or there is movement in the door joints.
Good preparation is essential of any woodwork and hardwood is sometimes difficult to "key" onto properly.
Don't be tempted to put any of the paint on thickly, work the first coat of primer with the brush hard into the wood and allow plenty of time for the paint coats to dry.
Several coats of paint, both undercoat and gloss, are better that a couple of thick coats.

Yes, I would agree totally with that.
20 years ago I used Farrow and Ball paint but that paint now appears to have changed almost beyond recognition.
