I’ve just acquired a rather nice old cast iron decorative grate, about 4’ 6” long by 2’0” wide by 1” thick. The main pattern is a series of interlocking hexagon holes with interlocking rectangular holes around the edges. I don’t know what it was used for originally but it works perfectly as a boot grate outside my front door. It has a bit of surface rust, so I was contemplating giving it a bit of a wire brush and then cleaning it up with a black grate polish such as Zeebo. Will black grate polish work outside or will it quickly wear away?, if so, can anyone suggest a better treatment? Perhaps black Hammerite would be a better solution?
