Who would like to see handpicked forum users as moderators

Who would like Rob and Simon to ask some regulars to become moderators with powers to delete the rubbish we have been getting of late?

After they've finished with my postings perhaps they could remove the porn as well :lol:

I vote yes; it should be an easy thing to set up and would be easily reversible if it doesn't work out.

I share Schoolmarm's concern about over-moderation but this particular issue is not really about moderation as such (hopefully).

Moderators with the power to delete porn, definitely yes. But, I think their remit should be only that, and not include the right to intervene in heated discussions just because they either approve or disaprove of a particular viewpoint.

I'm with Me! on this. Moderators who only delete pornopostings. Let's face it, we all jump in with our opinions on the heated debates, and they seem to work fine.

Do we get to decide who becomes a moderator? To nominate, or to vote? Oh, the power....

Reading posts on this site it would seem to me that everyone is very mature about their posting, even if it gets heated sometimes. So what's to moderate other than the porn stuff?

If you only want a moderator to get rid of the porn posters then maybe Simon and Rob can set up a report type posting button which goes directly to them with the posters ID. Posters on here can press the report button and then R & S can then "block" the ID from posting again. Alternatively just send them an email whenever you see the offending post.

Maybe the site posting security needs looking at rather than having moderators.

It beats me why anyone would want to post porn stuff on here in the first place, or have I missed something?

I've just had a quick glance at the Rules and Regs of posting as posted at the top of the board. A three strikes and then you're out ban is implemented. So why haven't these porn people been banned? It doesn't, in my view, require the 3 strikes for this type of posting, they should just be "blocked", end of.

It's mostly because the postings are done by automation. You delete the user and it reinvents itself as another user, etc etc.

You ban the IP address they use and they just use another one.

They can in fact work quicker than a person manually deleting what they are doing.

As for reporting the posts. I believe several people do it, those that visit regularly. In deed I do as does Nemesis that I know of, so Rob adn Simon then possibly have to sift through x number of pm's and emails to then start working on deleting the stuff.

Whereas instead of sending a pm or email to Simon/Rob saying this needs deleting, you could simply send one saying, I've deleted all of this, this was the IP address used. A tad more work for whoever sends the pm an doing the deletion, lots less work for Rob/Simon and a cleaner forum for the majority to use.

It would be for Rob/Simon to determine who if anyone they had as moderators, after all it is they who carry the can if someone decided to take legal action for anything that happens on the forum.

I'm all for spam-removal volunteers, but not for moderators. I suggest a ground rule is that the despammers can not moderate, otherwise as has been pointed out, things _always_ deteriorate, and eventually end up with a bunch of silliness, and that always destroys forums.

That mistake has happened so many times, and tbh its a bigger threat than the spam, so safeguards from the start are essential.

I can tell you that Simon has changed the forum's registration procedure so that new users cannot automatically activate their accounts. Only the administrator can now activate new accounts.

Hopefully this will kill the problem.

If it doesn't then I would vote for one or two trusted forum members to be given the power to delete porn postings. However, I very much doubt whether it would be possible for them to be given the authority to do this only. Deleting a post is deleting a post, so their authority would have to be revoked if they misused it.

But let's put this idea on hold and see whether Simon's action gets rid of the problem.
