Hi,
We bought a Georgian house last November and it has obviously had several modern alterations done to it.
1. One hiddeous feature is a cement or concrete rendering on one of the external walls. We would like to take that off.
We think there will be bricks underneath the rendering. Does anyone know if stripping the outer render is expensive – and if there is a risk of damaging the bricks underneath. There is a probability that the mortar between the bricks will be cement as well. But, how will we know? (is all brownish mortar sure to be lime, and all greyish the wrong stuff?). Does anyone know approx. how expensive it would be to redo the brick mortar? The wall is about 20 m2.
2. The other, rear, external wall is not rendered, but the lower half consists of red bricks, the upper half clad in reddish clay tiles – all of which seems traditional and common in our area (East Sussex). However, when having had a thorough look around at similar houses, a lot of them have a whitewash on the lower section ("ground floor"). I really quite like that colour scheme, and the house would gain visually from it. But me and my partner argue about what is the authentic style. Would it be wrong to whitewash the lower, bricked section? Is/was it something that was/is only done to the street facing walls?
3. There seems to be very little information about the Georgian Town Cottage on the whole, its typical, authentic features, style and what is appropriate to do today– whereas Georgian town houses and mansions have quite a stack of literature. Anyone knows a good internet source or book on the Georgian town cottage?
Thanks in advance for any information on any of these questions.
