I was in my loft for the first time yesterday ( only recently bought property) there was a lot of white powder on the bare walls. Is this damp? and how do i cure it.
Victorian property terrace white powder all along wall in loft this is on bare brickwork. the bricks do not appear to be damp could it be something else or could it just be old stuff. not on survey as surveyor could not gain access to loft area.
It sounds like salt efflorescence as a result of rainwater evaporation through the brickwork. If the roof space is insulated, the air within it will be warm and can hold a lot of water. Water moves fromt he brickwork into the air leving the salts on the interior surface.
As for curing it- why would you want to? I doubt it's causing much harm. I'd maybe check the bearing ends of the purlins to make sure they are sound. Investigate the flashing maybe.
This might not be a recent problem- vacuum the salts up and keep an eye on it.
The brickwork in our loft esp. on the chimney has got this white salt on it too. The problem we have is that the bricks are crumbling away - looks as if the salt is pushing bits off the bricks, if you brush on them you remove the bits of brickwork leaving white salt behind.
Or cellar has alot of salt on the walls too, although the bricks are quite solid.
