Which professional?

Looking for someone to help me decide which bits of the house are original, which are worth poking (eg taking out fireplaces to see what may be original behind) etc, which professional or trade would that be?

Can't think of anyone in any trade that I would trust with that, so it might be best to post us photos of the offending areas and we'll give you lots of opinions!

Ha ha I've quickly become used to the plethora of conflicting opinions to photos on here and definitely want someone who, should things be not as I hope, can advise on making good again!

A genuine heritage surveyor, or rounded conservation firm - ideally the small generational type, who have an interest, passion and experience, rather than a bigger outfit looking for volume work.

If you have the time and inclination, there’s a decent amount of good starter books out there that will get you a long way down that track yourself.

I have dealt with Triskele. James and one other spent two days at the house, giving me a folder of the findings with drawings and photos. I learned a lot from this (my house is about 1400, not 1700, as in the listing). He even discovered a "hidden chamber" ( too small to be a priest hole) in the bedroom we have slept in for ten years! He found lots of "protection marks," taper marks, and carpenter's marks.. We did not go for "Dendro" after seeing the price and hearing it may not be conclusive.

A sentiment that I know only too well from Blacksmiths Lane, Kelham, Notts (smoke-blackened rafters pictured). Listed as being a seventeenth century building, intensive survey of this private house yielded significant evidence of a three-bay, early fifteenth century hall house.
