Which paint is best- Linseed oil or Aglaia?

My basic quesion is.....Linseed paint or Aglaia for internal and external wood work?- what are their pros and cons of each and what stripping methods and cleaning products should I use with each of the paints if i don't want to use a heat gun?

Hi, Sara,

I've tried Holkams, and agree that it's nice to use, covers really well, and has impeccable eco credentials. But it takes forever to dry, and (on the darker colours) the gloss quickly weathers off leaving a paler, slightly milky surface.

Don't know anything about Aglaia.

My outdoor coating of choice is the Osmo Country Colour range. A microporous opaque coating which has a claimed recoat cycle of 7 years +. Used it on some oak windows and they're looking good a couple of years on. They also do a one-coat version, but I've not tried that.

Lots of things in tins for putting on wood, and you'll get as many opinions as there are people painting. Let us know what you choose, and how you get on!

I'm about to use holkhams linseed on some new interior woodwork but I have some holes that need filling first - does anyone have any recommendations for wood filler (knots, splits, screw head holes etc) in new softwood before overpainting with linseed oil paint - or is it fine to use "red devil" or some "DIY shed inerior wood filler"? I have some shellac to coat the knots with before painting.

I've nothing but praise for Holkhams for exterior use but my only two attempts with it indoors have been a bit disastrous!

Steveb, I'm sure any filler will do but being mean, I've used linseed putty (softened to a paste by addition of more linseed oil) as a pre-painting filler for the exterior work with no ill effects.

Yes Holkhams (actually Allback see http://www.linoljeprodukter.se/eng/index.php ) is best for exterior timber.

For interior there is more choice and Aglaia, made by the German firm, Beeck, have a lot of good products. http://www.beeck.de/english/wir_en/portr_fr.html

Holkhams paint is lovely stuff and I always use it for outside jobs. However, it is very slow to dry - too slow for use inside the house if you've got 3 young kids running about, as I have. I confess after starting off with linseed paint I switched to using Dulux water based satinwood inside!

As for filler - inside I don't think it matters too much, I've used 2-part Ronseal filler under linseed paint with no problems. Outside I followed Holkham's advice and used linseed putty for big holes (although don't bother with the expensive Holkham's stuff - the cheap stuff from my local glazier worked fine) and I used Holkham's chalk and luslack filler for finer filling, which worked well. Is it necessary? Not sure - but about 4 years ago I did a lot of deep filling with putty on one window cill that should probably have been replaced, and the repair has held perfectly so far. I reckon a repair with a modern 2-pack filler would have started to fail by now.

Linseed putty is nice stuff to use for filling the bigger holes, but of course it doesn't go off anywhere near as quickly as 2 part filler. The chalk and luslack filler goes off about as quickly as the modern 2-pack stuff.
