Where to buy wooden worktops

Hope to buy some wooden work tops soon for my new kitchen. Probably beech, maybe oak.

Anyone have any recommedations for places to buy? Kitchen is coming from MFI and they can supply, but I see IKEA is much cheaper plus lots of web suppliers.

Also, is 40mm best or 28? Or is it just a case of personal preference?

Would be interested to hear peoples experiences.

Funny you should mention this. I was only gossiping with the joiners the other day and they told me that they now buy in pre laminated lengths of beech, oak etc. in 600mm widths. Handy eh? If I remember rightly the downside was that the stuff is formed up in approx. 50mm strips which does'nt look as clever as wider pieces joined in the workshop. Tis a lot cheaper though.
You pays your money and takes your choice. Take your joiners advise on the thickness that is suitable. Mike.

28 is quite thin - or at least it looks it in use, only reason to buy it imho would be that it is easier to cut - you need a less powerful router.

also consider width of the top - 600 mm is standard size but that means that if your walls are not straight or any of your appliances cant go right against the wall for plumbing or electrics then it looks a mess.

I got mine (the thick sort) from our local John Lewis. Can't remember how much, but if I could afford it then anyone could. They had a huge range of different woods, and I chose the cheapest one. (My walls are v. wobbly, but it seemed plenty wide enough to cope)

I bought my worktops from homebase - admittedly I was looking for beech look laminate, mainly because I needed them not to be too deep owing to the size of our kitchen.

Homebase were brilliant, they cut the lengths to exactly what I needed and, when I discovered a warp in one of them, replaced it straight away, without any hassle, questions, anything!

Alternatively, Wickes sell a good selection of worktops as well.

I used universal worktops - bought online and they were fantastic - we have walnut and it was at least 50 per cent cheaper than MFI etc. They send you sample bits -

I've used IKEA worktops, Beech block about 40mm. Good value and very durable. Friend has used Howdens (part of MFI) also good value.
